Estimating Your Local Move

A 2-man crew can generally handle up to a 3-room move going from a first-floor to a first floor. If you have an apartment above the first floor, a house with 4-8 rooms (including: basement, attic, and/or garage), a piano or any other article requiring special handling, a van and three men would be necessary. A total of 8 or more rooms (including: basement, attic, and/or garage) would require a van and 4 men to do the move.

All moves within a 50-mile radius can normally be completed in a single day. It takes approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours total time per room, plus travel time, to complete a move. For example: A 4-room apartment in Amherst going to an apartment in Northampton should be completed in 4-6 hours.

The total time of a move can vary according to whether the rooms at origin contain less than average rooms or more than average rooms, or if some unusual circumstance at origin or destination makes access to a dwelling difficult. However, the formula above is a useful tool to calculate an estimated cost of most local moves. If you believe your move will be complex, larger than average, or might be unusually difficult for any reason, we would be pleased to provide a written estimate after performing an on-site visit.

These estimates are based on averages which can very from family to family. If you have lived in a house for five years, it is likely that you have accumulated more than the average newlywed or new homeowner.
The estimates above include our basic liability for your household goods of $.60 per pound.
Basements, attics, and garages must also count as rooms to be moved. Some basements may count as more than one room if they are used as heavily as household storage space and contain much more than an average room used as living space.

The estimates above do not include any packing labor or carton costs. For information about packing services or carton prices for local moves, click here.
